Surat was the first city in India where it was made compulsory to use solar water heating system for hot water in all residential apartments and houses. In the starting of this year, our Union urban development ministry has taken adequate and necessary actions to modify and change the houses so that it becomes fit for solar water systems in all 58 cities to make it a solar city.

The Surat municipal corporation (SMC) is going to take necessary actions to modify the houses and construct it in such a way that solar water systems can be installed in each and every 10.2 lakh houses and 65,000 buildings present out there.

Anyway, solar water heating in only a small step made in Surat, to make it a solar city. There are many more activities going on like installing solar panels in producing electricity and replacing all normal street lights to CFLs and tube lights. The aim is to use all sorts of renewable sources of energy so that the use of a conventional source gets reduced by 10 to 15 percent in the next five years. Even SMC has appointed a meeting with WISE (World Institute of sustainable energy) to point out the proper plans to install solar water heating systems.
